PhD Research Colloquium in Computing and Information Sciences
Rochester Institute of Technology
Abstract: Any game (or other software) that is not a direct copy of an existing product has some design risk: the chance that some ideas won't be as great in implementation as they seemed like they would be on paper. This is particularly true for games that are highly experimental in nature, those that defy genre and push the boundaries of what is possible in the medium. In this talk, game designer Ian Schreiber will talk about how and why experimental games are made, with examples drawn from his own current and past projects.
Bio: Ian Schreiber has been in the video game industry since the year 2000, as a programmer and then as a game designer. He began transitioning to academia starting in 2006. He has worked on six published game titles and two training games for Fortune 500 clients. Ian currently makes games and teaches game design and development courses here at RIT in Interactive Games & Media.
